Mary buys art supplies on eBay from “FineArt1234567”. Mary knows that FineArt is the eBay account name used by Jane Smith, and that Jane lives in New York. Mary is so happy with FineArt that she posts this message in an online art discussion group: “I buy from Jane Smith in New York. You can find her on eBay… her eBay ID is FineArt1234567”. Although her intentions were good, Mary has violated the policy on publishing contact information.

“Online public areas” include these and similar areas:

  • Web pages

  • Online forums

  • Newsgroups

  • About Me pages

  • Board Posts

  • Feedback Comments

Examples of the type of information eBay considers private:

  • Name

  • Address

  • Phone number

  • Email address

Note: User IDs are not considered personal contact information.

Privacy is a building block of eBay. When a member registers an eBay account name, they expect that their personal information will be kept private. For that reason, publishing contact information related to an eBay member is not permitted.
