Best Mold-release remover for resin/plastic model kits available
Resin and plastic model kits are treated with a mold-release agents, like silicon, that must be removed before paint can stick to the finish. I have tried aqueous sudsy ammonia, strong detergents, and even solvents to remove mold-release agents without success. A dilute potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution works better than anything else I have tried. Add 1/4 C. of potassium hydroxide flakes to 3 or 4 gallons of warm water and put this in a large rectangular plastic (sweater) box. Submerge the resin/plastic parts in the dilute KOH solution for about an hour and rinse to remove (KOH solution is slippery to the touch). Use metal tongs to remove parts from the KOH solution (never your hands). Let parts air dry and then they can be painted without any problems. Resin/plastic parts do not react with the KOH solution.
