After returning from a weekend hunting in the great Pacific Northwest and having a THIRD (yes, I said third) Rhino 110 fail I thought that I'd share my experience with my ebay friends.
The symptoms are always the same. The unit starts to quickly dissipate the batteries, the batteries themselves get really hot and the unit just stops working. In both cases where I had the unit repaired the paperwork that Garmin returned indicated that there was a power amplifier that was defective. While Garmin repaired my first unit under warranty and I paid for a second repair myself I won't be fooled a third time.
When the unit works I do have to admit that I really like the GPS. Locks up really fast and is pretty user friendly. The radio is a different story. In my opinion it stinks. It's not good for more then a half a mile in the Oregon back country hence I still carry a separate Motorola Talk-About (the really lost cost version) and it absolutely puts the Rhino radio to shame.
It's a really great concept that Garmin has here and if they could improve the reliability of their product and bring the quality up to Motorola levels they'd have a homerun product. As it stands I wouldn't recommend this unit to my worst enemy!
