I think I'll have me some of them french-fried 'taters
Excellent movie. There isn't a weak link in the cast but strong performances from Thornton and Black. Especially enjoyed Dwight Yoakam as the baddie of pantomime proportions - a role he pulled off with scary aplomb. Sad story, haunting soundtrack, some genuinely comic moments, overlooked at the box office - the perfect antidote to CGI - recommended to all so do yourself a favour...

An evocative & life-affirming study of a disappeared time
Some of the cobbles, jiggers and landmarks are still there but the essence of poverty-stricken, between-the wars Liverpool that Passmore describes has largely disappeared. He describes with unusual clarity and recall the sights, sounds, even the smells of the time, the rites and sights of daily life and the dilemmas and obstacles facing a sometimes one-parent family with,at various times, almost nil income. Easy to read, Passmore's powers of description evoke a time when the modern world was in it's adolescence and most people's knowledge of it ended at the top of the high street. But this is no sob story (as with his eminently readable other books covering his brief career in the RAF and five years trudging from one German PoW camp to the next) the author dispassionately examines his life and asks no pity for his truncated childhood, his ignorance and innocence, struggles and embarrassments. The refrain is a familiar one - poverty was a constant but happiness was also present. On life, Passmore aims a word or two at the modern generation (sadly, the people to whom he refers are unlikely ever to read this book, or any book)... Truly life affirming, it will stay on the shelf and be re-read and recommended to anyone that cares to ask. I have found many lessons herein.
