Item did not pass Dell diagnostic tests upon receipt. Ultimately the problem was with the Hynix NVMe ssd module. I replaced that with one of my own SSD units and the laptop started behaving properly (would now accept an OS install, for example). I had considered returning the unit, but the rest of it is in great condition so I prefer to just accept that the Hynix NVMe was on its last legs and move on. Cheers!
