Reviews"...attractive to many readers. I recommend it for every WLAN user, students, graduate students, as well as engineers and mobile operators." (IEEE Communications Magazine, August 2003), Wireless Local Area Networks is for those who will be charged with designing, building, and maintaining those networks, and it is a resolutely practical book. The very first page of the preface promises that the chapters were chosen for "conciseness and clarity [without] unnecessary information." The book begins with an overview of wireless standards, and moves on to cover network security, public access, personal area networks, and future developments. The chapters are, as promised, clear and concise. The overview of 802.11b in Chapter 1 and the Bluetooth overview in chapter 13 are both excellent introductions to these wireless networking standards. -- ACM Networker Overall, the book is a valuable source of information about wireless LAN technologies with special respect to IEEE 802.11 standards. It contains a lot of practical information that comes from the experience of the authors....Lots of illustrations help understanding of important topics. The book will be attractive to many readers. I recommend it for every WLAN user, students, graduate students, as well as engineers and mobile operators.-- IEEE Communications "...attractive to many readers. SynopsisProvides a practical introduction written by engineers from the leading wireless LAN manufacturers Each chapter brings the reader up-to-date with the latest in LAN technology from such companies as 3com, Alcatel, Ericsson, Intermec, Mobilian, Cisco Systems, Texas Instruments, Time Domain Corp., and Network Associates Provides detailed information for anyone who wants to learn about, implement, or invest in wireless LAN technology Features chapters on security, Bluetooth, spectrum allocation, QoS, ultra-wideband wireless, key standards, and more, A key introduction to wireless LANs by authorities from the industry's leading corporations "The material in this book is timely indeed, and represents the latest word on wireless LAN technology. This book presents the case for why the technology has emerged, how it works, what are the issues, and where it is going. It presents the thinking of a collection of experts in each of many individual areas, and so comes across as a detailed presentation covering all aspects of wireless LANs from the underlying technology all the way to the business case for deployment." -Dr. Leonard Kleinrock, Professor of Computer Science, UCLA, and Chairman, Nomadix Inc. Wireless local area networks are becoming ubiquitous and increasingly relied upon. From airport lounges and hotel meeting rooms to cafes and restaurants across the globe, wireless LANs are helping mobile professionals stay connected wherever they roam. Sales of IEEE 802.11b wireless LANs now rival those of wired Ethernet networks and may soon outpace them. This book provides a clear, comprehensive introduction to the wireless local area technology from a unique perspective: that of the companies and personnel who are the major players in the field. Wireless Local Area Networks: The New Wireless Revolution covers virtually every aspect of wireless LAN history and design, including standards, network security, public access, wireless applications, and future technology. Among the 16 contributions you will find: ∗ Texas Instruments on the evolution of 2.4 wireless standards ∗ Atheros Communications on the 5 GHz IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN ∗ 3Com Corporation on 5 GHz radio spectrum regulations ∗ Agere Systems on wireless network security ∗ Alcatel on wireless LAN for mobile operators ∗ Nokia Mobile Phones on wireless LAN access architecture ∗ Ericsson Wireless Communications on Bluetooth basics Explaining practical issues such as design, implementation, equipment purchase, security, and the implications of various standards, and featuring the expertise of the wireless industry's foremost leaders, this is the ideal reference for anyone involved in the design or management of wireless LANs., Das ideale Nachschlagewerk für alle, die sich mit dem Entwurf oder der Administration drahtloser Netze beschäftigen! - eine Einführung von auf diesem Gebiet führenden Unternehmen - praxisnahe Zusammenstellung der Themen - erläutert werden Entwurf und Implementation von Systemen, Einkauf von Komponenten, Aspekte der Sicherheit und die verschiedenen Standards - nützlich auch für Studenten der Elektrotechnik und Informatik, Wireless local area networks (LANs) and personal area networks (PANs) seem set to play an expanding role in the future of telecommunications, and particularly in the convergence of local networks with the fiber-optic Internet backbone. This book is an introduction to the subject by the companies at the forefront of wireless LAN development.
