About this product

Product Information

This eleventh volume in The Adventure of Discoveries & Inventions series covers the period 1945 to 1960. As the world emerged from war in 1945, there was a huge need to repair the damage and an earnest desire to make use of what had been learned. Massive government-backed projects were undertaken in several nations, not least the quest to harness nuclear power to generate electricity. Rocket technology was developed to begin the exploration of space, while jet engines came of age in civilian aeroplanes. The Festival of Britain and the Brussels Expo 58 were hugely popular exhibitions that looked towards a brighter future. Various inventions of the period seemed to hold out that promise, from the Vespa scooter to the contraceptive pill. Other innovations that would have enormous implications for the future included computers, integrated circuits, fibre optics and the structure of DNA.
