Additional information4 Hero: Dego, Mark Mac (various instruments). Additional personnel: Carol Crosby (vocals); DJ Hand (alto saxophone). Dancehall dissidents Dego McFarlane and Mark Clair were figureheads of London's Ecstasy-driven breakbeat hardcore scene. PARALLEL UNIVERSE was a departure for the veteran producers, forsaking the brain-cooking euphoric rush of rave for a celestial variant of drum-and-bass that slipped all terrestrial shackles. The album beat Goldie's TIMELESS to the gates by several months and ushered in an era of ambitious and conceptual album-oriented "armchair jungle" music. This was the golden hour of drum n' bass. Neither gravity nor earthly reality binds PARALLEL UNIVERSE. Mercurial escape-velocity breakbeats somersault through wormholes in four-dimensional space. The light-speed perambulations of "Wrinkles In Time," "Shadow Run," and "Solar Emissions" tie the Continuum into knots! 4 Hero's melodies are penned in comet-trail vapor, space dust, and efflorescent synth scrawl. Metamorphic voices orbit renegade snares like satellite moons. On such tracks as "Universal Love," "Sunspots," and "Follow Your Heart," fusion instrumentation (Fender Rhodes, Moogs, guitars, sax) is transformed into the stuff of planetary symphonies. McFarlane and Clair orchestrate the cosmic unraveling and "Terraforming" from afar, like gods at play conducting the Genesis of new solar systems.
