With graphical enhancements over the first two titles in the series, Dirt Track Racing 2 offers 14 new tracks (ovals, D-ovals, tri-ovals, egg-shaped, and figure-8), three classes of cars (Pro Stocks, Late Models, and "Concept" Modified), and two modes of racing. Quick Race lets you select a car, track, and the number and skill level of opponents without concern for the elements of building a successful career. Career Mode demands a progression through the three classes of cars as you earn money to upgrade from amateur to professional status by improving and modifying cars and winning events. In DTR2, careers are built by racing in series, which are, in turn, a collection of events. Events can be detailed or brief, with the former allowing practice, qualifying, heats, and main races, while the latter (the default mode) don't allow practice but offer "hot lap" sessions. In addition to earning money for winning a series, placing in mains or heats, or logging the fastest qualifying time, you can also grab some cash with appearance money (if good enough) and sponsorships. Dirt Track Racing 2 offers use of the 30 tracks from Dirt Track Racing and the 20 tracks from Dirt Track Racing: Sprint Cars, but only in multiplayer mode -- not during Quick Race or Career Mode. Up to ten players can participate via a LAN or the Internet. Other features include multiple control options (keyboard, mouse, joystick, wheel), extensive car tuning (wheels, brakes, stagger, tires, steering), suspension tuning (springs, compression, rebound, shocks) and chassis adjustments (weight, drive ratio). Performance upgrades occur throughout the advancement in career mode, with components including elements like engine specs, cylinder heads, weight reduction, fuel injectors, tire compound, brakes, suspension, exhaust and more. An interesting feature is the establishment of a "groove" during each race, as two racing lines (cushion and inside) become defined as the event progresses, creating a strategic choice car handling. Multiple VCR-like controls offer reverse, pause, slow motion, fast forward, and more during replays.
