Product Information
Off-camera flashes capture a photography subject in more natural-looking illumination than a flash mounted directly to a camera. To operate your off-camera flash, you can set it as a slave to be controlled by an on-camera master transmitter. The Canon Speedlite ST-E2 wireless transmitter communicates with your Canon flashes, so they fire in sync with your camera. A click of the shutter button will trigger the ST-E2 to transmit a signal to your remote slaves. In this way, they can cast perfect lighting for every photo. The ST-E2 mounts to the hot shoe of your camera. On most compatible shoes, the device locks in place with the push of a sliding button. With the ST-E2, you can control any number of slave flash units. These are grouped into two channels, A and B, and each group can contain as many slaves as you choose. The ratios for groups A and B adjust individually. You can adjust the ratios in half-step increments for a total of 13 steps. The range of available ratios is from 8:1 to 1:8. You can also turn the ratios off, in which case all connected slaves will fire equally. This accessory is compatible with other Canon products. The specific Speedlite flash models with which it works are the 420EX, 430EX, 430EXII, 550EX, 580EX, and 580EX II. As for cameras, it works with both type A, or E-TTL / autoflash, and type B, manual, Canon EOS units. It is compatible with the EOS 1D Mark II N, the 20D/60D/70D EOS-1Ds MARK II, and the EOS 5D Mark III. It also works with PowerShot units, including G3, G5, G6, G7, and G9. An AF-assist beam operates in low-light and low-contrast settings with certain compatible cameras. The power switch turns this Canon gadget off and on. In addition, the switch has a hold setting. This selection will retain your current settings. It keeps them until the device powers down. In this mode, all buttons except the one for test transmission, which is used to check communication, are disabled. This way, you will not accidentally bump a button and change your chosen settings.Select one of four channels on which to transmit the infrared pulse signal from the ST-E2. The device functions over a range of 12 to 15 meters indoors. Outdoors, the range is 8 to 10 meters. Its transmission range is approximately 40 degrees in the horizontal direction and 30 degrees in the vertical direction. The transmitter must have a line of sight with the sensor on the flash that you are using. The device transmits the signals forward, so it is important to stand behind your flashes when using the ST-E2. Of course, with an off-camera shoe cord, you can work around this positioning. The package comes with a case for protected portability. The Speedlite accessory measures 2.4 x 2.0 x 3.1 inches, and it weighs 3.5 ounces plus the battery weight. The small size and handy case make it easy to slip this add-on unit to your gear bag with other photography accessories. The accessory requires a 2CR5 6-volt lithium battery. To conserve the life of batteries, the device powers down automatically after 90 seconds of sitting idle. It is good for about 1,500 transmissions before it needs replacement. You can transmit to your Speedlites about 50 times before giving the unit a short rest.Product Identifiers
