The Bust-A-Move series enters its seventh year and 22nd manifestation (give or take a few), this time appearing on the Game Boy Color as Bust-A-Move Millennium. It is the second Game Boy Color title in the series and the third overall to appear on Nintendo's portable. In Bust-A-Move, the player moves the bubble shooter at the bottom of the screen and hurtles a variety of colored bubbles upward into a bubble-packed playfield. The object is to position the bubbles in strings of three or more. This causes them to burst, removing them from play and freeing up more bubbles to pop. But the playfield gets ever lower, and if any bubbles pass the bottom "deadline," the game ends. Bust-A-Move Millennium follows 1999's Bust-A-Move 4 acting more as an update than a revolution. The engine is essentially the same with a few graphical tweaks scattered throughout and an updated character roster. There are a few significant changes to Millennium Edition, however. The first is color: Bust-A-Move 4 was a hybrid game, equipped for play on either the regular Game Boy or GBC. This version, on the other hand, is a Game Boy Color-only title, in apparent response to complaints that Bust-A-Move 4 was virtually unplayable in green-and-gray. Thanks to this, colorization has been updated and the palette has been increased slightly. The second big feature, and perhaps the most important, is the addition of a versus mode via the Game Boy link cable. In addition to the Story mode, where you select from the pantheon of legendary Bubble Bobble characters and go through a thinly plotted series of contests against computer controlled opponents, Puzzle mode involves making your way through a course of pre-designed puzzles, with a variety of difficulty levels to choose from. Challenge mode moves players through various levels with different specific objectives, such as clearing bubbles quickly or dropping as many extra bubbles as possible, and ranks you after you're finished. Endless mode goes on infinitely, relentlessly lowering the playfield towards players until they lose or get tired of playing.
