The graphic iconography of this wonderful vint Modernist enamel over copper dish isn't an abstract or geo-abstract piece but rather uses some of the same artistic treatments as found in other abstract Modernist enamel plates, incorporating controlled wet-on-wet glaze bleeding & allowing some unexpected material events, as a result of the plate being baked in a hot kiln after it was hand decorated. The scene here is one of an enormous, curling & crashing blue tsunami wave, seemingly enveloping a raised blue enamel orb or blocked out sun in the background, w/a pr of bas-relief, cut-out metal seagulls affixed to the basin of the plate & then glazed white. The tumultuous body of the wave is populated w/convulsing, churning colors, that represent the ocean literally turned upside-down by the power of the tsunami, claiming nearly everything in its path. The scene is curiously beautiful even though the tsunami menaces as it crashes down.”
