Friedrich von Tirpitz (1849-1930) who entered the Prussian Navy in 1865, was ennobled in 1900, and rose to become Lord High Admiral of the Imperial German Navy in 1911. As Secretary of State for the Navy (1897-1916), he piloted the naval laws and built up a fleet designed to challenge British supremacy at sea.
