In fact it was used and is not close to being functional. There are obvious signs of wear and the existing batteries in the caliper were corroded and long ago had leaked acid in the battery chamber. The spare batteries were also dead and corroded. I did clean the contacts as well as reasonably possible and installed fresh batteries.
