L'ammiraglio tedesco Karl Dönitz lo considerava il migliore fra i migliori. Un riconoscimento che non mise in dubbio nemmeno quando Luigi Angelo Longanesi Cattani, ammiraglio sommergibilista, rifiutò di arruolarsi nella Repubblica Sociale. Nato a Bagnacavallo, in provincia di Ravenna, nel 1924, entra nell'Accademia Navale di Livorno. Al comando del sommergibile Brìn e poi del Da Vinci compie, nei primi anni di guerra, spettacolari missioni atlantiche contro la flotta britannica che gli valsero due Croci di Ferro. Nel 1942 passa alla X Flottiglia Mas come comandante del sommergibile Murena; l'8 settembre il Murena verrà autoaffondato mentre la corazzata Roma è in mare verso il suo tragico destino. Longanesi Cattani lascia il comando operativo e segue il Duca d'Aosta in Austria. Nel dopoguerra venne destinato al comando dell'incrociatore Eugenio di Savoia e terminò la sua carriera militare come ammiraglio di squadra.
