Jim ottiene un successo internazionale con "The Basketball Diaries", volume autobiografico che narra della sua adolescenza travagliata, vissuta come promessa della pallacanestro in una scuola esclusiva della Grande Mela ed accompagnata da una spaventosa dipendenza dall'eroina che lo spinge alla prostituzione a soli 13 anni. Dopo essere entrato in contatto con i più grandi scrittori beat del periodo e lavorato alla Factory di Andy Wharol, viene convinto dall'ex fidanzata Patti Smith a tentare la strada del rock. "Catholic boy" (1980), il suo disco d'esordio, registrato con la Jim Carroll Band e uscito sotto la super visione di Keith Richards, è considerato uno degli album punk più rappresentativi del periodo.
