This is not at all the type of book I would normally read, yet I found it remarkably compelling from the outset. Rarely have I read a novel which so poignantly juxtaposes tragedy with hope without becoming excessively sentimental or mawkish. The characters are believable and likeable, each one deftly painted with a few expert strokes.
