Das Buch bietet eine Einfuhrung in die wichtigsten theoretischen Grundlagen und methodischen Ansatze der Vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft am Beispiel ausgewahlter Regierungssysteme Westeuropas und Nordamerikas. Die 4. Auflage des Buches stellt starker als die vorherigen Auflagen eine Einfuhrung in die theoretischen und methodischen Grundlagen der Vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft dar. Diesem Zweck dient die Vorstellung von Ansatzen wie denen des Neo-Institutionalismus und des Konstruktivismus, die erst in den letzten Jahren verstarkt in der Vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft verwendet wurden. Berucksichtigt wird dabei auch eine zunehmende Annaherung an bzw. Konvergenz mit Erklarungsmodellen und Ansatzen der Internationalen Politik. Am Beispiel von typischen Vertretern parlamentarischer, prasidentieller und direkt-demokratischer Systeme wie Grossbritannien, USA und der Schweiz sollen die unterschiedlichen Strukturprinzipien, die damit variierenden Politikprozesse und die sich unterscheidenden Politikergebnisse verdeutlicht werden. Ein abschliessendes Thema ist die Zukunft der Nationalstaaten vor dem Hintergrund regionaler Integration und Globalisierung.
