The traditional technique entails a simple running stitch along the edges. Depending on the purpose of the final product, it is referred to as Lepkantha or Sujni Kantha. Kantha embroidery is prevalent in eastern South Asia, particularly in Bangladesh, West Bengal, and Odisha. In Odisha, old saris are stacked and hand-stitched together to create a thin cushion. This cushion is typically placed on top of a bed or used as a substitute for a regular cushion. Transforming worn-out rags into a functional quilt is no easy feat! Over time, a more intricate nakshi kantha tradition emerged. The significant demand for kantha pieces in India, Bangladesh, and abroad has led the owners to appreciate their kantha works, while also instilling a sense of pride in the women and girls of Bangladesh for their exceptional skills.”
