In the role of a "born survivor" like Bear Grylls, players face the perils of deadly terrain and wild animals, while fending off the more insidious dangers of starvation and dehydration. Based on the same-titled reality television series, which airs on the Discovery Channel in the U.S., Man vs. Wild strands players in expansive areas of virtual wilderness and challenges them to make it out alive. As on television, the player's onscreen persona parachutes into each scene, alone and with no helpful equipment. The goal is to make it across the untamed territory to a pre-determined extraction point, and the test is in surviving the journey. Each wild area presents a fresh series of action-oriented challenges and environmental puzzles.<br><br>To make it through most scenarios, players will need to find food, water, and shelter, and be ready to defend themselves against hungry predators in their natural environments. They'll also face emergencies that require cool-headed, quick thinking, such as sinking in a pit of quicksand or being attacked by a shark while aboard a hand-made raft. Many situations in the game provide an opportunity for informative commentary from Bear Grylls, who explains crucial concepts and clever techniques in voiceover. In the game's normal mode, a series of glowing icons helps guide players in the right direction through each territory. A hardcore difficulty setting removes these visual hints, for a more authentically unabated survivalist challenge.
