Not sure how it works: the side faces of the insert are vertical. So I feed a 1.5mm cut into a 30mm steel bar, and it cuts really well. But it's not too keen plunging into the bar at right angles. So probably best to start it in a groove made by a parting tool. A good tool for the money, strong and rigid with heavy cuts, gives a fine finish.
