Item was not working - upon inspection the battery compartment had apparently been exposed to moisture and the batteries and contacts were corroded. I trashed the batteries, removed the contacts and brushed them with baking soda dissolved in water. I dried the contacts and reinstalled them with fresh batteries, after which the item functioned properly - hopefully will continue to do so.
