Reviews
The textbook aims at developing a conceptual as well as a quantitative understanding of introductory physics. A major strength is that the book includes a case study in every chapter that helps make the content relevant to the student's life. The case study demonstrates how the chapter's content can be used to understand and develop technological applications., Very few books take the dialog approach, which was used already very effectively by Plato. We all have a natural ability to understand stories and dialogues, and they are much more interesting than dry explanations. I think this device is perfect to address common misconceptions., Deb Katz's approach is to tie entire chapters around interesting and relevant case studies that I really think will keep the students reading and wanting to know more. She has been able to do this without compromising on the delivery of core concepts the students need for their futures in science and engineering. In fact, I think the approach will help the students remember the core principles better., I found the writing to be more like someone was teaching me through text rather than me struggling to decipher it. The student dialogues help especially when you're reading by yourself. Usually if you are studying with other students you can argue over your answer and discuss how you got there, but when you're studying alone it is difficult to be able to ask yourself the right questions. The dialogues provided different opinions that I could think about and agree or disagree with and come up with reasons why., I really enjoyed the case studies and found them helpful in seeing the real world applications of physics.

Synopsis
Cengage Learning is pleased to announce the publication of Debora Katz's ground-breaking calculus-based physics program, PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS: FOUNDATIONS AND CONNECTIONS. The author's one-of-a-kind case study approach enables students to connect mathematical formalism and physics concepts in a modern, interactive way. By leveraging physics education research (PER) best practices and her extensive classroom experience, Debora Katz addresses the areas students struggle with the most: linking physics to the real world, overcoming common preconceptions, and connecting the concept being taught and the mathematical steps to follow. How Dr. Katz deals with these challenges--with case studies, student dialogues, and detailed two-column examples--distinguishes this text from any other on the market and will assist you in taking your students "beyond the quantitative.", Cengage Learning is pleased to announce the publication of Debora Katz's ground-breaking calculus-based physics program, PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS: FOUNDATIONS AND CONNECTIONS.
