Giuseppe Prezzolini fu autodidatta senza diplomi, giornalista, ufficiale e professore; considerò sempre la vita la migliore delle scuole. Ai primi del Novecento svolse un ruolo importante nel rinnovamento della cultura italiana, avvalendosi delle riviste "Leonardo" e "La Voce" per liberare il paese dalla retorica dannunziana, dall'erudizione accademica e dalla mentalità provinciale. Dopo aver partecipato alla Grande Guerra, si dedicò alla diffusione della cultura, lavorando fra l'altro all'Istituto Internazionale per la Cooperazione Intellettuale, presso la Società delle Nazioni.
