About this product

Product Information

As a guide to the theory and practice of modern and old time sequence dancing, this book aims to answer some of the questions asked by newcomers and more experienced dancers. The aim is not so much to teach dancing but rather to aid the instructor by providing material that can be studied away from the dance floor. For the beginner the book provides a series of graded exercises that lead to the performance of a simple sequence dance. The author develops strategies for learning and remembering sequences with the help of appropriate examples. To aid the process of understanding and memorising, the text is illustrated with dancing figures which are classified by foot movements rather than by individual dances. Throughout the text reference is made to Latin-American and old-time styles since under the present system, two thirds of new award-winning dances originate from these forms of dance. Sequence dancing has a long and interesting history as exemplified in the introduction. The book also includes a chapter by Ken Fuller that sets out in some detail the development of the modern sequence style in the Manchester area from 1950 to 1965. Within this work the author attempts to distil from past and present wisdom those elements which are of the most direct value to the modern sequence dancer.
