About this product

Product Information

The Bow End of Rain is a true story told in two voices, one of a mother, Dorry and the other of a daughter 'Bern', short for Bernadette. Dorry talks out her story in Bern's presence. She wanders along her life path and tells it all as she remembers. Her mind often wanders from incident to incident without any special attention to the sequence in which these incidents happen. During Dorry's conversations, Bern relives her own childhood and reveals her view of her world in a stream of consciousness that is hidden and very private. She tells her own story in this way.In the telling, the reader becomes involved in worlds that often relate to the same incidents from very different standpoints. Both protagonists are drawn one to the other because they see commonality in the intricacies of their relationships with Hugh, husband and father, and the six other children in the family. The events related by Dorry and Bern range from the everyday things that happen in their small village life in Botswana to the violent, fearful, traumas that are experienced in abusive relationships. Both have their own way of surviving and finding joy. Dorry remains with her feet on the ground and confronts life as it is, even though she often feels powerless and Bern escapes in poetic interludes and lofty ideals that help her cope with all that comes her way.The text is saved from heaviness and despairing accounts of life because it is so often laced with humour and wit that is sometimes dry and sometimes simply funny. The book derives its title from Dorry's philosophy that there is a bow at the end of rain and from Bern's bow of ribbon tied in her hair on top of her head. This is symbolic of all that 'rained down' on her head and on her sisters and Dorry. This book makes compelling reading and once the reader enters into the world of Dorry and Bern it is difficult to put the book down. It is also the first of two volumes. The second is about Bern and her friend, who enter a convent together. Bern does this in an attempt to save her father's soul and her friend tells the reader her own reasons.
