While the seller could not have known it, this piece was made in Wisconsin only 90 miles west of its sales operation, near modern Mount Horeb, and constructed and decorated by a woman, Marit Aslaksdatter Lie (pronounced Lee) Skogen. I date it to the early 1880s, and I know it was one of many identical bentwood boxes probably made as betrothal gifts for young Norwegian men to give to their financees in the area of the Blue Mounds Settlement of Norwegian Americans. Thanks for the insight!
