Reviews
American Rebels series. This biography does a serviceable job telling the story of Joplin's life. There's little original observation; excerpts from a biography about Joplin written by her sister supply the psychological insights. However, readers interested in Joplin s lasting legacy will find useful information. Sidebars and photographs, most black-and-white, break up the pages. Reading list, timeline, websites. Synopsis
Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Janis Joplin spent much of her adolescence looking for a place where she belonged. In 1967, she found that place onstage, singing with Big Brother and the Holding Company, a band from San Francisco. Joplin became a household name after the Monterey Pop Festival, and her star burned bright until her untimely death in 1970 at the age of 27. Although she had a "tough girl" shell, she continually sought acceptance from those around her. Despite her early death, her accomplishments and influence are felt throughout the music industry today. She continues to be an inspiration to musicians everywhere. Book jacket., Author Edward Willett gives a comprehensive biography of legendary singer Janis Joplin, from her childhood singing in the church choir to her adolescent rebellions with the local beatniks through her drug and alcohol use and her amazing musical success. With a powerful and soulful voice, Janis blazed a trail for other female rockers during her short and eventful life.
