Kristina Odenweller veranschaulicht in diesem Band die diplomatische Karriere des aus Padua stammenden gelehrten Juristen Giovan Francesco Capodilista, die in der ersten Halfte des 15. Jahrhunderts eine bemerkenswerte geographische Spannweite erreichte. Als Diplomat in Diensten der Republik Venedig war er sowohl auf dem Basler Konzil als auch am Hof Papst Eugens IV. tatig, bevor er in den Dienst des romischen Papstes wechselte. Gleichzeitig dokumentierte er in einer ab 1434 auf dem Basler Konzil entstandenen Handschrift seine eigene Familiengeschichte, die er bis auf die Zeit Karls des Grossen zuruckfuhrte. Diese aufwandig illuminierte Handschrift wird als der Capodilista-Kodex bezeichnet, und verdeutlicht nicht nur Giovan Francesco Capodilistas Interesse an seiner Familiengeschichte, sondern auch seine Strategien zur Legitimation, Selbstreprasentation und auch Manipulation der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart durch gezieltes historiographisches Schreiben.
