Reviews
I haven't read novels [in the past ten years] except for all of the Patrick O'Brian series. It was, unfortunately, like tripping on heroin. I started on those books and couldn't stop., [O'Brian's] Aubrey-Maturin series, 20 novels of the RoyalNavy in the Napoleonic Wars, is a masterpiece. It will outlive most of today'sputative literary gems as Sherlock Holmes has outlived Bulwer-Lytton, as MarkTwain has outlived Charles Reade, Brings [O'Brian's] achievement to a new height....Such is O'Brian's power to possess the imagination that I found I was living in his world as much as my own, wanting to know what happens next. That is the real test. Any contemporary novelist should recognize in Patrick O'Brian a Master of the Art.
