When lava cooled, gas pockets were trapped inside the magma producing these vesicles as the stone cooled. These vesicles can greatly vary in size and contain mineral pockets. Some are agates, made when water containing quartz builds layers inside over a process that can take millions of years. This is because these stones are porous and many minerals such as calcite, epidote, and quartz deposit themselves in these cavities.
