Jantje Halberstadt untersucht diese Frage empirisch und zeigt auf, dass First-Mover-Vorteile in nationalen Markten existieren, was im Wesentlichen auf dem Argument beruht, dass nationale First Mover die Vorteile des Ersten im nationalen Markt mit den Vorteilen des Folgers aus globaler Sicht kombinieren koennen. Die First-Mover-Vorteile sind ausgepragter, je intensiver Netzwerkeffekte zum Tragen kommen. Einhergehend mit der First-Mover-Hypothese wird zudem haufig von Winner-take-all-Markten ausgegangen, in denen sich langfristig ein einzelner Anbieter durchsetzt. Die Studie zeigt jedoch, dass nicht generell von nachhaltigen Monopolgewinnen ausgegangen werden kann - insbesondere je schwacher Netzwerkeffekte wirken.
