Dondup, un giovane funzionario del governo, sogna di lasciare il Bhutan per recarsi in occidente, dove crede che potrà trovare tutto ciò che sta cercando. L'occasione arriva e Dondup parte in tutta fretta. Ma sfortunatamente perde l'autobus ritrovandosi sulla strada insieme ad altri due viaggiatori che stanno andando nello stesso posto: un monaco buddista e un venditore di mele. Lungo la strada incontrano una serie di pittoreschi personaggi e la bella Sonam che forse riuscirà a far cambiare idea a Dondup sul suo paese e a fargli abbandonare il sogno americano.
