Seller Notes: “Highly sought after City map of Newport (Nieuwpoort); A Strong Sea Port Town in Flanders, Restored ... “Highly sought after City map of Newport (Nieuwpoort); A Strong Sea Port Town in Flanders, Restored to the Empire by the Treaty of Utrecht. Hand Coloured, most likely later, and taken from Mr Tindale's Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England. Size 365 x 470mm approx, with vertical fold lines from being in the book, some light staining, though not too noticeable owing to the colouring, some age toning, as expected, and text offsetting verso. 'Explanation' to the left hand corner. Unstated, but by Isaac Basire. Isaac Basire (1704-68) was an renowned map engraver. He is often remembered for a great number of maps he engraved for Tindall's continuation of Rapin de Thoyras' History of England. He also contributed maps to the Gentleman's magazine. He was the first of his generation in a line of engravers, but was arguably the most successful. A lovely map indeed, that would be especially enhanced mounted and framed. Scarce. One of a number of similar Items I am selling.”
