My great grandfather lived in Black Earth WI his entire adult life I met him in 5 years old in 1954. I could see grass and a wooden fence through the cracks between the 1" thick boards nailed to the randomly places wall studs. His bed was made of canvas 'bag' filled with old straw. There was a thick rope-lattice that kept the straw "mattress" off the bare wooden floor. His wash basin was filled with gray enamel cooking pots. I don't remember seeing any in-doer pluming. Grand Pa died in 1958 @102
