Allers è considerato uno dei più lucidi ed efficaci critici del sistema psicoanalitico freudiano - Louis Jugnet l'ha definito "l'anti-Freud". All'idea di uomo scisso sia al suo interno che dal mondo, Allers contrappone quella di uomo come un "intero", ossia una interrelazione di parti non separabili l'una dalle altre e strettamente interconnesse tra loro. Inoltre, l'uomo è intimamente legato al mondo che lo circonda. La presente opera, edita a Londra nel 1932, costituisce - insieme a The Successful Error del 1940 - la pars destruens del lavoro di Allers. In questo lavoro l'intellettuale cattolico prende in esame le basi teoriche di quelle che all'inizio del secolo scorso venivano chiamate le "nuove psicologie" - la psicoanalisi freudiana e la psicologia individuale di Adler - in contrapposizione alla psicologia sperimentale della fine del diciannovesimo secolo.
