Really cool old batteries, No. 1 size batteries were an early version of what became C batteries (No. 2 became D batteries) and have a cool history. Once the smallest unit cell you could buy, the No. 1/C battery was formed over a broom handle and the No. 2/D battery was formed over a shovel handle. These early batteries found use in flashlights and other lighting equipment.
