Li Shenzhi was the first director of the Institute of American Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a former advisor on sino-US relationships to Chinese leaders Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang, and a renowned liberal intellectual widely known for his article criticizing the CCP's dealing with the protests of 1989. After his death over a decade years ago, his former colleagues, including his successors and prominent scholars in the field, and mostly, the young scholars entering the institute shortly after it was founded in 1981, who regard him as their mentor and role model, wrote essays to memorize Mr. Li Shenzhi who's not only an outstanding scholar, but also a decent man of integrity, humbleness, passion, and sense of responsibility.
