Eugenio Montale definiva Kavafis "un vero alessandrino, nello spirito e nella carne", e ne indicava la "genialità" proprio nella consapevolezza del poeta neogreco "che l'Ellade di allora corrispondeva all'homo europaeus di oggi". In questo modo il grande poeta italiano rispondeva a quei critici - e non furono pochi, all'inizio - che avevano rimproverato a Kavafis una presunta mancanza di "originalità", senza saper vedere come invece la sua poesia fosse riuscita nell'impresa di "immergerci in quel mondo come se fosse il nostro": e un'immersione in profondità, come solo la grande poesie riesce a fare.
