Seller Notes: “Antique African Tribal Carved Hardwood Crocodile Sculpture.A superbly carved dark African hardwood ... “Antique African Tribal Carved Hardwood Crocodile Sculpture.A superbly carved dark African hardwood sculpture which could be mistaken for a dinosaur-crocodile, though I believe it is in fact just a substantially sized crocodile.I do believe it is an early example, not just because of the dark & beautifully patina'd wood, but also because it so resembles an early beast as would be seen on old nautical maps with sea serpents.It is beautifully detailed with amazing large scales, rough underside, large thick angled mouth & snout, a diamond shaped head design, everything slightly larger & more exagerated.Something about the carving also seems to suggest possibly Kenyan, and I'd say it is at least early 20th century, probably earlier.It measures about 3" in height, 1.75" wide, and 11.5" in length, though it has lost the end section of tail, though this truly does't detract from this rather unusual piece, so please check all of the photos for a closer inspection.”
