Tchaikovsky's Symphony 6 often suffers from hyperbolic pathos when approached by western conductors. Svetlanov's interpretation is more balanced, bringing out the emotional depth without dizzying sentimentalism. I wish I'd become aware of his work sooner, because he is rapidly becoming my favourite interpreter of Russian repertoire.
