"Poor response, non-response and lost response to treatment in major psychiatric disorders are the rule, not the exception. The challenge of treatment resistance is foundational to the practice of clinical psychiatry. Charlie Nemeroff has gifted the field with a masterful and authoritative volume that goes well beyond algorithms and recipes for next step treatment and provides evidence-based disquisition of the heterogeneous contributors to treatment resistance, and thus drives thoughtful differential diagnosis and treatment planning. This is an essential volume for modern psychiatric practice and clinical research." -- Jerrold F. Rosenbaum, MD, Chief of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Stanley Cobb Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School "This book has something for everyone, from the student to the expert. A critical and ubiquitous aspect of psychiatric practice - treatment resistance - is comprehensively addressed in a scholarly yet practical fashion. Descriptions of the phenomenology and neurobiology of each of the many disorders considered are lucid, up to date, and state of the art. This is a terrific text." -- David R. Rubinow, MD, Assad Meymandi Professor and Chair of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine "Unfortunately, many patients with psychiatric disorders do not respond to initial therapy. Refractory or treatment resistance is a major problem for many patients and all treaters. This superb book consists of 15 chapters--authored by leaders in the field-- on the issue of resistance in the major psychiatric disorders. The chapters provide sophisticated but readable overviews of the problems encountered in treating patients with all of the major disorders and in the best evidence for overcoming them. It is unique because it emphasizes resistance across all classes of psychiatric syndromes and it thoughtfully includes both somatic and psychosocial approaches. This is a must have volume for all mental health practitioners. " -- Alan F. Schatzberg, MD, Kenneth T. I appreciate how the book illustrates various treatment options, along with detailed pharmacological treatments." -- Aaron Plattner, MD, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Doody's "It provides quite extensive, clear and updated information on the management of various treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, highlighting future treatment options currently under research. I am sure psychiatrists will find it practical and useful." -- Amit Jain, The Psychiatrist, "Poor response, non-response and lost response to treatment in major psychiatric disorders are the rule, not the exception. It is an excellent resource that belongs on the bookshelf of not only psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners but also other mental health professionals... Overall, I urge every reader to own this book and use it as a practical reference for the many treatment-resistant or refractory patients in clinical practice. It will save hundreds of hours of browsing PubMed to access all of the data between the covers of this timely volume!" --Journal of Clinical Psychiatry"Given that most psychiatric disorders are chronic and relapsing, this book represents an unusually practical text that combines standard treatment protocols with less conventional but eminently usable treatment suggestions for recalcitrant symptoms. Synopsis
A sizable percentage of patients with major psychiatric disorders do not respond to the first or second treatments they receive. This book summarizes the latest evidence from clinical studies concerning the treatment of patients with treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders. Both pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions are included, as well as somatic non-pharmacological treatments. The chapter authors represent the leaders in their respective fields., Although there are a variety of textbooks and manuals of psychiatric disorders, few have focused on the management of treatment-resistant patients. Those that exist have largely focused on treatment-resistant depression and even these are now largely outdated. Because psychiatrists and other mental health care professionals increasingly manage patients who fail treatment from family practitioners and other non-psychiatric specialists, a single practical volume summarizing the evidence-based medicine as well as the art of managing treatment-resistant patients is a much needed volume for practitioners, psychiatry residents and other mental health workers. Most importantly, both psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions will be included, a shortcoming of many previous volumes.
