Keep your lance high in "Joust," a video game for NES that replicates the arcade experience. You take on the role of a knight mounted on a flying ostrich or stork, fighting enemy knights mounted on buzzards. Your two-dimensional battlefield offers a mix of stone platforms and lava pools. When lance comes to lance, whoever has the most height wins. If your defeated foe lands on rock, he becomes an egg and respawns as a more powerful enemy. Those that fall in lava are destroyed. Like many other NES games, it also offers a cooperative mode for two players. A deceptively simple game, Joust proved highly influential in the development of a number of other games.
