Notes
Take the L Train follows the less-beaten track traveled by innovative 21st century crossover musicians such as the Kronos Quartet and Keith Jarrett. In search of a fresh voice that would capture Forbidden Flutes' precocious spirit, Laura and Liesa thoughtfully collected and created the music for this recording over a period of five years. Their versatility is best characterized by the tracks, Purple Phobia, a Prokofiev-inspired jazz original, and the Foxtrot Fantasy, a theme and variations on classic jazz standards composed in the Doppleresque-style popularized by two flute and piano ensembles of the 19th century. Perhaps the first flute duo ever to arrange music by Radiohead, Forbidden Flutes has also brought new life to the work of Astor Piazzola. Adding some Latin flare to this CD, they commissioned New York composer and session musician, Nic Cowles, to write Las Flautas Prohibitas which sets this album on fire with the help of their propulsive rhythm section. A true pastiche of musical tastes, this collaborative project is as fun as it is sumptuous. Forbidden Flutes is an eclectic ensemble which pushes the boundaries of classical music. Laura Barron and Liesa Norman founded this electrifying duo in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1998. Originally they specialized in the highly virtuosic and entertaining repertoire of the nineteenth century. However, Laura and Liesa's vision quickly expanded as they started exploring ways to incorporate diverse musical styles into their art. They have created an image that is edgy and enticing. Their music now ranges from jazz arrangements, film music, and Radiohead cover tunes, to Bach and Mozart. As well, they have commissioned music and also written and arranged multiple works themselves. Forbidden Flutes performs as a duo, a trio with piano, or backed up by a rhythm section of bass, piano and drums. In addition to numerous concert appearances they have been featured on City TV, Kron 4, Vancouver Television, KNAU and CBC radio and have toured extensively throughout North America both performing and teaching workshops. They were also feature performers on the Friday Night Gala Performance at the 2004 National Flute Association convention in Nashville. They are excited to release their first commercial CD, 'Take the L Train'. Expect their shows to attract everyone from martini drinking hipsters to the tea and crumpet crowd. The only thing forbidden to them is limits! At 17, Laura Barron made her solo debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has since then maintained a passionate and diverse professional career. Highlights include concertos with the Brandenburg Ensemble in Lincoln Center as well as performances with Alexander Schneider's Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Recently, she was hailed 'one of the finest flutists of her generation' (Flute Network). Her passion has taken her to England, Germany, Austria, Japan and to nearly every state and province in North America for recital, orchestral and chamber music engagements. She loves to teach and formerly held professorships at UW-Madison and Northern Arizona University. In Flagstaff, AZ, she also founded the Painted Sky Music Festival which features the Forbidden Flutes each summer amongst many of the country's finest artists. Her recordings include 'Echoes of a Blue Planet' and 'Playing with Fire' which have been met with rave reviews. Recently, she spent an illuminating year traveling to five continents. From European recitals, French courses in Morocco, Dalai Lama teachings in India, to volunteer work in the Bolivian jungle, this experience was a perfect reflection of her varied interests. If you ever find her in a compromising position, it is likely to be 'upside-down lotus' because she also teaches yoga workshops for musicians throughout the US and Canada. As a classically trained flutist and pianist with a doctoral thesis from the University of British Columbia on "Music and Fusion in the 21st Century", her musical endeavo
