Karl May, der als Abenteuer- und Jugendschriftsteller bekannte Schoepfer des Winnetou , unternahm 1899/1900 eine 15-monatige Reise in den Orient, die ihn bis nach Sumatra fuhrte. Unter dem Eindruck der orientalischen Welt, die er bisher nur aus Buchern gekannt hatte, verfasste er religioes gepragte Gedichte und Aphorismen, die er in einem Band Himmelsgedanken veroeffentlichte. Geradezu euphorisch schrieb Karl May am 10.09.1900 an seinen Verleger Friedrich Ernst Fehsenfeld: Ich trete erst jetzt an meine eigentliche Aufgabe, und zwar mit diesem Gedichtsbande, welcher das Thor zu meinem Tempel bildet , und er war davon uberzeugt, dass wir Epoche machen werden. Der Band erscheint nach 2005 zum zweiten Mal als Reprint der ersten Ausgabe von 1900. Er dokumentiert das Streben eines Mannes, der mehr sein wollte als ein Unterhaltungsschriftsteller, und eine tief empfundene Religiositat, die uns in der Weise heute fern ist.
