Cystic fibrosis is a tragic, fatal disease. An inherited disease passed on to children, cystic fibrosis makes it hard for an infant to breathe and often even to eat. Every year, about one thousand children in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. Some die as children. With treatment, some live well into adulthood. Right now, about thirty thousand United States residents have the disease. Author Susan Dudley Gold tells the story of Kenny, a twelve-year-old boy who was diagnosed with the disease at age four months. Kenny studies at home, but is able to enjoy bicycle riding and other activities with friends. Through Kenny's story, Gold explains the causes and care of cystic fibrosis, including information on the new types of medications that are helping boys like Kenny live longer, healthier lives.
