About this product

Product Information

Between 1910 and 1915 Gino Severini was a central figure of Italian Futurism-the movement that celebrated modern life by giving expression to speed, dynamism and above all contemporary philosophical theories about sensory perception in the new urban and industrial environments of the early 20th century. As a resident of Paris from 1906, he served as an intermediary between his Futurist colleagues in Italy and his friends among the Parisian avant-grade, dominated at this time by Cubism. The Dance above all others inspired the experimental imagination of Severini during his Futurist period. Taken by Severini from the artistic imagerie of Paris towards the end of the century, the theme of the dancing figure becomes a real icon of modernity, metaphor of dynamism, instrument of a research aimed to explore new perceptive ways and image of the world built on rhythm and psycho-physical involvement of the spectator. The volume charts Severini's exploration of the theme, and his pictorial journey to the limits of abstract art by using light and colour: 50 paintings by Severini together with nearly 50 works by European contemporaries avant-garde masters (from Seurat to Van Doesburg, Kirchner, Man Ray, Gaudier-Brzeska, Muybridge, Nevinson, Boccioni, Depero, Balla and Sironi), coming from major museums and private collections in the world. Severini's biography and bibliography are included.
