Reviews
Kicking off with a shot of the porcelain god and some bolded vocabulary (urine and excrement), this fascinating entry in the True Stories series quickly goes down the drain--and that's not a criticism. Virtually everything related to toilets is covered, from the bodily functions that require such facilities all the way to the technology of the toilets of tomorrow (toilet-to-tap system, anyone?). "A Short History of Toilets" is the most surprising chapter, with its running time line of toilet innovations, photograph of an ancient 12-man Tunisian toilet, period sketches of waste being chucked from village windows, and a 1884 newspaper clipping advertising the "ornamental flush-down W.C." of Thomas Crapper. Raum has the arcana down: chamber pots featuring the mugs of unpopular leaders in the 1700s, the boat tours of Paris sewers in the 1800s, and even the origin of the alligator-in-the-sewer urban myth. But there's real educational value here, too, notably in the discussion of sewage treatment plants, the debate over pay toilets, the international scope of health problems related to poor sanitation, and the twisty time line that ends the book. Whether you call it a lavatory, loo, or latrine, you might want to bring this book along for your next visit.-- Daniel KrausBooklistApril 1, 2009, Kids want to know how the world works and this series helps them to do just that. From skyscrapers to electricity to cotton, readers can discover the facts of just about anything. As all good reference books do, this series contains a contents page, timeline, resource page, glossary, and index in each book. Glossary words are typed in bold and explanations of illustrations are written in simple phrases. For the younger reader, these books may not read word for word, but the illustrations and emphasized text contained inboxes will catch the eye of most, giving each reader an overview of the subject. Reading further, the author tells of each topic fully, from the benefits of using salt to make soap to explaining the trouble with pesticides used in cotton fields. Each was written with an experienced science consultant, making the information more reliable. A fun presentation of encyclopedia-type material, this series satisfies children's curiosity about the world around them. Recommended--Missy Can Dusen, Librarian, Mahon Public Library, Lubbock, Texas Library Media Connection November/December 2009, These books live up to their promise to "uncover the hidden facts behind everyday things." Price explains how chocolate was discovered and became popular, its ingredients, the chocolate-making process, and how companies like Hershey and Cadbury became successful. Bread covers the history of the staple and its importance, the harvesting of grains, and the equipment used to bring it "From Fields to Tables." Readers will learn, for example, that bagels were originally created in the shape of a stirrup to honor the King of Poland. Toilets covers the history of the convenience and of indoor plumbing and sewer systems, waste treatment, and the use of "toilet-to-tap" systems (which should elicit plenty of "yucks"). The well-organized texts are informative and clearly written, and the numerous color photographs and drawings are eye-catching and complement the narratives well. These titles provide a lot of information in a friendly format that is great for reluctant readers. First choices for report writing.
