Formed in 1965 in San Francisco, as thousands of baby-boomers transformed the Haight-Ashbury district into an international mecca for the counterculture, Airplane quickly gained renown as a pioneering and popular band. In a kaleidoscopic haze of flower power, free love, LSD, political activism and artistic renaissance, Jefferson Airplane was one of the bands of choice. They were on the scene before the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin or Santana. Helping to start San Francisco's first serious rock club, the Matrix, the Airplane were also the first true homegrown stars at the Fillmore, the first to sign a record contract, and the first to crack the Top 10 charts with Somebody to Love and White Rabbit . Written with the full co-operation of all the band members, plus friends and associates, this biography chronicles the story of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship and Hot Tuna. It includes accounts of Woodstock, Monterey and Altamont, where singer Marty Balin was beaten up by Hell's Angels.
