Scritto intorno al 1793-94 da una Jane Austen appena diciottenne, "Lady Susan" è un romanzo epistolare mai pubblicato fintanto che la scrittrice era in vita. La prima pubblicazione avvenne a opera di un nipote della Austen, James Edward Austen-Leigh, nel 1871, come parte del "Memoir", una biografia sulla vita della scrittrice scritta dallo stesso Austen-Leigh. "Lady Susan" è un romanzo che differisce dai più celebri romanzi della Austen, sia per la convenzione usata del romanzo epistolare, sia per il fatto che la protagonista indiscussa del libro, la bella Lady Susan, è un personaggio "cattivo". Il romanzo si articola in 41 lettere e una conclusione in terza persona, nelle quali la bella vedova Lady Susan Vernon si adopera per combinare un matrimonio d'interesse sia per la riluttante figlia Frederica sia per se stessa.
